Channel 4 Follow Up: McKenna Street canyon gets filled in

10:15 PM CDT on Wednesday, March 12, 2008

By Bill Capo / Eyewitness News Action Reporter

Residents on an Uptown neighborhood celebrated Wednesday, one day after worrying about what they felt was a major safety hazard.

Fewer than 24 hours after an Eyewitness News Action Report brought light to a canyon on McKenna Street, the city began to do something about it.

The crater on McKenna Street near the corner of Nashville Avenue was a huge hole that ate up half the street and stretched to the sidewalk. Neighborssaid the Sewarage and Water Board sent crews out to repair a subsurface problem and that they dug the hole weeks ago.

But when it was left covered by planks, the neighbors became worried.

After the report aired Tuesday night, crews returned Wednesday morning.

“They’re here! They’re here,” Cecile Tebo said. “I can’t believe it. It’s very cool.”

Said Colin Schneider, “I was really surprised. I woke up at 8:30 this morning – I saw y’all out here the other night – and woke up at 8:30 and saw the trucks here. They were here that quick.”

The Sewerage and Water Board sent out a big crew with four trucks and a back-hoe, and they worked all day on the project. Neighbors were so happy to see progress, they hugged crew members and gave them lots of thanks.

“This is a miracle, and what's so awesome is we're getting this taken care of before something horrible and tragic happened,” Tebo said. “Something horrible could have happened.”

Executives said repairing the broken underground sewer line is a major project, but it should be completed tomorrow. Having the hole filled in, and the street is safe once again made residents grateful.
