Action Report: Lakefront gets cleanup after complaints

06:54 PM CDT on Tuesday, July 22, 2008

Complaints by fishermen about the sanitary conditions along the lakefront led to quick action by the Orleans Levee District following a phone call from the Eyewitness News Action team Tuesday morning.

The fishermen trying to enjoy themselves and haul in a catch near the Ted Hickey Bridge complained about overflowing trash cans and poor conditions inside of the few portable toilets in the vicinity.

"Oh, it’s bad,” said Ricky Carter.  “We got to sometimes bring contract bags to empty the cans right here.”

“I'd rather go behind the car than use the facility,” said Otis Alexander.  “If you think I'm lying go open that door and look in there."

Louis Capo of the Orleans Levee District responded to a call and promised immediate action, which was delivered.

"I was very much shocked. But we have the crews out here today,” said Louis Capo, who is no relation to Bill Capo. "We were picking up trash out here at the Seabrook three times a week, we've increased that to five times a week,” Louis Capo said. “We're placing two additional dumpsters, and we're placing additional barrels out here."

He ordered sixty more trash barrels to be placed along the entire length of the lakefront, and one look inside the portable toilets made him start planning improvements there as well.

"I will be in touch with the contractor today who has the Port-O-Lets, and we are going to increase the frequency of cleaning, and perhaps increase the number of Port-O-Lets."

Within a couple of hours, the first dumpster had been delivered, while crews were cutting grass and even vacuuming up the litter.
