Action Report: Independent eldery woman needed help finding a place to live

At a time in life when many senior citizens are enjoying rocking chairs, Rosalie Stiles exercises her arms and legs with 50 lifts every morning before walking for 40-minutes three times a day. Her eyesight is the only thing that is getting worse.

But don’t ask Rosalie her age.

Rosalie has stayed in great physical and mental well being by exercising every day.

“I really don't know my age, because I enjoy life so much. And I used to lie, so I don't know what my age is,” Stiles said. “Numbers are for bingo, I'm just a healthy, happy person."

Just a few days ago, Stiles was also a worried person. The apartment complex she had lived in for 24-years was being converted into condominiums, and she had to find a new place to live at one of the most difficult times ever in this city.

"Because I was desperate, we had to be out of her on the 31st, and I was going like this: 20 more days, 19 more days,” she said.

When Rosalie called the Action Line, I got in touch with Christopher Homes, which provides housing for senior citizens. I wasn't the only one to call about her, and they rushed to help her.

“Mrs. Stiles was placed on a waiting list here at Metairie Manor, and as the apartments were completed, her name came up, and she was ready to get into her apartment,” said Ann Laiche, a Christopher Homes representative.

“I said, ‘thank the Lord, because He sent my guardian angels to help me.’ I thank him all the time,” Stiles said.

Knowing other seniors would need places to live, Christopher Homes said it was seeking tax credits they could use to repair the damage from Hurricane Katrina.

"We have applied for $56 million to renovate 700 apartments, a little over 700 apartments, in the New Orleans area,” said Dennis Adams, of Christopher Homes.

Rosalie has already worked out how she will furnish and decorate her apartment.

“So I'm ready to go; my hutch, and my table and chairs, and my new sofa that's coming,” Stiles said.
