Clancy's commentary: Voters want City Hall mayoral control of S&WB
NEW ORLEANS – The latest University of New Orleans poll shows New Orleans voters have strong feelings about the future of the Sewerage and Water Board.
An overwhelming 59 percent of those polled said to put the agency under the mayor's control. Only 18 percent said privatize it. Even fewer, 11 percent, said keep it as is.
Voters inherently know that water, sewerage and drainage are critical public services and the best way to hold someone accountable for those services is to put them under someone who answers directly to the people.
In this case, the mayor.
We already know the Sewerage and Water Board needs to be fixed from the top to the bottom. Now, the next mayor knows that voters will hold her responsible for fixing it.
