Suspected drunk driver who hopped out of ambulance arrested
ST. BERNARD PARISH -- A suspected drunk driver who hopped out of an ambulance while he was on the way to the hospital has been arrested.
The Sheriff’s Office said Renzoll Marrero, 34, of Violet, crashed his vehicle into a pole about 12:30 p.m. on Nov. 11 near Chalmette Avenue while he was driving east on St. Bernard Highway.
Authorities said Marrero had three children -- ages 7, 5 and 2 -- in his vehicle when he crashed.
The Sheriff’s Office said the children with Marrero were not injured and were returned to their mother.
The Sheriff’s Office said Marrero’s speech was slurred when they arrived on the scene of the crash and he was disoriented and not able to respond to commands.
An ambulance was called for Marrero, who said he suffers from seizures, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Marrero jumped out of the back of the ambulance and ran away. A deputy chased Marrero, the Sheriff’s Office said, but could not catch him.
Marrero was wanted on charges including DWI, obstruction of justice, possession of marijuana, driving without a license, failure to control a vehicle, no insurance and three counts of cruelty to juvenile.
He is now in NOPD custody.
