Americans throw away 40 percent of their food

The findings of a study published in the Los Angeles Times shed some interesting light on the amount of food Americans throw away, especially as food costs continue to climb.

"Americans are throwing out nearly every other bite of food, wasting up to 40% of the country’s supply each year – a mass of uneaten provisions worth $165 billion, according to a new report from the Natural Resources Defense Council," says reporter Tiffany Hsu.

Yearly, according to Hsu, the average family of four throws away over $2,000 worth of food, and 20 pounds of food per month. See full story
