NEW ORLEANS - CNN has put Commander’s Palace on a list of the nation’s 10 best historic restaurants.
The Garden District restaurant, opened in 1880 and purchased by the Brennan family in 1974, joins eateries from Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, New York and San Francisco on the list.

“Of New Orleans' historic grande dame restaurants, and there are a few, Commander’s Palace, built in 1880 in a stunning Victorian house, is the one that isn't just banking on its storied reputation,” the article said.
“The kitchen has produced New Orleans legends, from Paul Prudhomme to Emeril Lagasse, and today showcases the food from future culinary rock star Tory McPhail.”
The CNN article rightly mentions that Commander’s is just one of the city’s historic restaurants.
Besides Commander’s, the city can lay claim to what many consider the oldest continuously operating restaurant in America: Antoine’s, opened in 1840 – before any of the other restaurants on the CNN list. Other venerable historic restaurants in town include Tujague’s (1856), Galatoire’s (1905), Arnaud’s (1918) and Broussard’s (1920).
