OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (AP) — A dog at a veterinarian clinic north of Ocean Springs has tested positive for the highly contagious canine influenza or dog flu.
It is one case, but veterinarians on the Gulf Coast were alerted. They have been vigilant about testing for the flu that has the potential of causing pneumonia. A number of samples have been sent to labs from this area for testing in recent months.
The Sun Herald reports (http://bit.ly/JDkRAe ) the South Mississippi Veterinarians Association alerted local vets after the case was confirmed.
Officials say Dr. Lisa Wilkerson closed a portion of her office for two weeks, and was proactive in notifying clients, other veterinarians, animal control and animal associations in the area to keep the disease from spreading.
The dog she was treating has recovered.
