HOUSTON — A 12-year-old Houston boy took his family’s truck on a joyride Saturday and ended up crashing through a neighbor’s fence and injuring a woman.
Around 1 p.m., 34-year-old Elia Ortiz was stacking wood along the side of her garage, preparing for a holiday cookout.
"I was watching TV and I hear this big bang," said Lania Ortiz, the oldest of Elia's four children. "I run, check... my mom is on the ground and my sister is screaming."
She said it was a black GMC truck that came crashing through her family’s fence. It shattered the bricks of their home and knocked her mother off her feet.
"She was hit in her leg and when she fell it fractured her back," Lania said.
Police took the boy into custody as an ambulance took Ortiz to Northwest Memorial Hospital. She is expected to recover.
Police have since released the boy and he has not been charged.
