NEW ORLEANS - Three members of what authorities believe is a violent gang that engaged in heroin distribution were indicted Friday by a special grand jury, the district attorney's office announced.

The indictment accuses 26-year-old Randy "Tokey Heffner" Calvin, 25-year-old James "Poo" Alexander and 22-year-old Chance "Doona" Skipper of conspiring to distribute heroin on behalf of the "Byrd Gang."

Criminal District Judge Paul Bonin unsealed the indictment after the defendants were apprehended.

A news release from the DA's office said it is believed that members of the "Byrd Gang" have been engaged for months in a violent feud over narcotics with members of another gang around the former Calliope housing project.
