Man arrested after shooting bus driver, forcing his way into 9th Ward home

"A lot of people, when they have problems with the bus driver and stuff like that, they get violent."

NEW ORLEANS -- A New Orleans man is in jail, accused of shooting a Regional Transit Authority bus driver.

The shooting happened Thursday night near the corner of St. Claude Avenue and Louisa Street.

According to the NOPD, Dimintris Polk, 30, boarded a bus before 10:30 p.m. and told the driver he needed to be taken to "the middle of the block."

Police say that's when he started yelling and firing a gun inside the bus.

One of the the two bullets he fired ricocheted and grazed the driver's forearm.

Darlene Langlois, a frequent rider on the St. Clause-Jackson Barracks bus route, said he's seen violence on the bus before, but not like this.

"He had no right to shoot the bus driver," Langlois said. "A lot of people, when they have problems with the bus driver and stuff like that, they get violent."

Langlois called the shooting very alarming.

"I would have been scared if I was on the bus," Laqnglois said. "I would have ran. You know what I'm saying? Because a bullet has no name. Anybody could have gotten shot. That's sad."

Police say Polk jumped out of the bus and started running after the shooting. He ended up two miles away in the 1500 block of Flood Street in the Lower Ninth Ward.

Police claim Polk forced his way into a home and threatened to murder a husband and wife and their small child.

The homeowner did not want to be interviewed, but confirmed they were able to call police from inside the home.

Police arrested Polk as he was allegedly leaving the home.

Sophia Lugue lives around the corner.

"That's dangerous and that's scary," Lugue said.

This is just the latest crime in the Lower Ninth Ward neighborhood. One man was killed and four others were wounded in a shooting five blocks away on Mardi Gras night.

"It's a home invasion last night," Lugue said. "Night before, 5 people got shot on the block farther up the street. When this going to stop."

Polk now faces counts of aggravated battery, illegal use of a weapon, aggravated burglary, aggravated criminal damage to property and illegally possessing a weapon as a convicted felon.

He also faces eight counts of aggravated assault.

The RTA released a statement about the injured driver:

"He remained calm, cool, collected and followed his training and no passengers were hurt. The driver was grazed in the arm and was taken to the hospital, where he was treated and released."
