NEW ORLEANS — About 100 people gathered and prayed outside of a federal appeals court in New Orleans to show support for Louisiana minister Tony Spell.

The pastor's lawyers asked the appellate judges to revive a lawsuit he filed challenging state coronavirus restrictions.

Spell faces six criminal charges after repeatedly flouting public health restrictions last year at his Life Tabernacle Church in the Baton Rouge suburb of Central. His lawsuit was dismissed in November by a judge who said it was largely moot after the safety rules imposed by Gov. John Bel Edwards repeatedly eased.

Spell wants to keep fighting even though most restrictions have been lifted.
