Arrests made after man tries to run over Slidell officer, officials say

Police say when an officer tried to stop the driver of a stolen U-Haul, the man turned the truck around and sped up, attempting to hit him.

SLIDELL, La. -- Two people are in jail after officers say a man in a stolen U-Haul tried to run over a Slidell police officer near a Walmart Wednesday evening.

Officials said the incident happened at the Murphy Oil gas station parking lot in the 39100 block of Natchez Drive.

When a Slidell police officer ordered the people out the truck, police said 19-year-old Aliyah Sherrieff got out of the passenger's side of the truck but 32-year-old Ricky Cooper tried to drive off. Cooper than circled back around the parking lot and reportedly sped up, nearly hitting the officer and Sharrieff. Police said fearing for his life, the officer fired at Cooper.

Cooper then reportedly tried to get away, going behind the nearby Walmart, but was blocked in by other officers. He jumped out of the truck, and police said he was arrested after a short chase.

Cooper faces various charges, including attempted murder of a peace officer and possession of a stolen vehicle.

Sharreiff is facing charges of resisting an officer and possession of a stolen vehicle.

Officials said Cooper had minor injuries due to the windshield shattering in the U-Haul.

This is still an ongoing investigation.
