Audubon Institute offering cricket king cakes until Lundi Gras

The Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium says it is "enhancing" the beloved Mardi Gras treat with something more exotic: cricket.

NEW ORLEANS – If you are looking for possibly the next big king cake topping, you’re in luck.

The Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium says it is “enhancing” the beloved Mardi Gras treat with something more exotic: cricket. The museum’s insect kitchen, Bug Appetit, will offer king cakes topped with Crickets until Lundi Gras on Feb. 12.

The tastings are included with general admission while supplies last.

Director of Visitor Programs Jayme Necaise says the cakes have a “nice nutty flavor” with a “crickety” crunch.

"Bring your krewe on down for a slice of cricket king cake, throughout the Carnival season. You’ll be glad you did!" Necaise said.
