School Board races are often overshadowed by other elections, but in Jefferson Parish, voters sent a loud and clear message this election season: They want board members to work together, to support the superintendent and not play politics.
The biggest indication of that was the lopsided defeat of controversial, long-time board member Cedric Floyd.
Another big takeaway: Jefferson business leaders beat the Jefferson teachers union.
Candidates backed by business leaders captured seven of the board’s nine seats against union-backed candidates.
School board members don’t have the high profiles that legislators have, but their decisions have just as much long-term impact. All the more reason to pay close attention to those decisions — in Jefferson, and elsewhere.
