Clancy: Jefferson Parish voters sent a message to the school board

The mid-term elections have come and gone without a lot of fanfare in Louisiana, but the elections for Jefferson Parish School Board produced some surprising results.

School Board races are often overshadowed by other elections, but in Jefferson Parish, voters sent a loud and clear message this election season: They want board members to work together, to support the superintendent and not play politics.

The biggest indication of that was the lopsided defeat of controversial, long-time board member Cedric Floyd.

Another big takeaway: Jefferson business leaders beat the Jefferson teachers union.

Candidates backed by business leaders captured seven of the board’s nine seats against union-backed candidates.

School board members don’t have the high profiles that legislators have, but their decisions have just as much long-term impact. All the more reason to pay close attention to those decisions — in Jefferson, and elsewhere.
