Clancy's commentary: Mayor-elect LaToya Cantrell credit card use investigation

This matter is too important to let even a hint of politics overshadow a potential case.

Sometimes the best thing to do is … wait.

That would be good advice for state Attorney General Jeff Landry, who’s investigating Mayor-Elect Cantrell’s city credit card use.

In addition to Landry, the Legislative Auditor also is looking into the credit card debacle. But, the auditor will examine credit card purchases by all seven council members, not just Cantrell. More important, the auditor is a nonpartisan, nonpolitical appointee. Landry, a Republican, is an ambitious politician. This matter is too important to let even a hint of politics overshadow a potential case. That’s why Landry should wait for the auditor to finish his work.

Ultimately, the auditor could refer entire matter back to Landry – and to the feds – along with a detailed forensic report to guide them.
