An apartment building in Gert Town was damaged by fire and smoke Saturday afternoon, the New Orleans Fire Department said.

About 2:30 p.m., firefighters noticed heavy smoke in the area near Washington Avenue and Earhart Boulevard.

They discovered flames coming from a two-story apartment building in the 1300 block of S. Salcedo Street.

Fire officials called for a second alarm, since the units may have been occupied.

Firefighters were able to keep the fire confined to the unit where it broke out.

Three of the four units were occupied at the time of the blaze, NOFD said.  Two of the three occupied units were not directly affected by the fire but suffered minor smoke damage.

The fire was under control within 20 minutes.

No one was said to be hurt.

Entergy, New Orleans EMS as well as the American Red Cross are helping the residents affected.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
