HARVEY - A man who was removed from an apartment that had caught fire was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival at the hospital Friday.

The incident occurred just after noon in the 4200 block of Lac Du Bay Drive.

Deputies arriving on the scene found the victim, identified as 66-year-old Eugene Burden, who was removed from the burning building by firefighters.

Sheriff's Office spokesman Colonel John Fortunato said the victim appeared to have suffered burns to the lower part of his body and was unresponsive.

Fortunato said that EMS was able to get a pulse and he was rushed to a local hospital.

The identity of the victim is being withheld pending family notification.

Firefighters said the cause of the fire, which the State Fire Marshal's office said started in the bedroom, appeared to be accidental.
