UPDATE: Jefferson Parish Council votes to ban Airbnb, other short-term rentals

The measure is not an overall ban for the entire parish and would only affect areas that are typically single-family home neighborhoods

UPDATE: The Jefferson Parish Council unanimously voted to ban short-term rentals in all residential areas.

Residents supporting the ban say they've been dealing with loud, disrespectful Airbnb guests in their neighborhoods for years. Residents who oppose the ban say the short-term rentals allow them to supplement their retirement by renting out rooms in their homes.

METAIRIE, La. – The issue of banning short-term rental properties in parts of Jefferson Parish will be decided Wednesday.

The Jefferson Parish Council will vote on an ordinance that would ban short-term rentals, commonly used for businesses like Airbnb, in single home residential areas.

If the measure passes, residents can still rent properties along certain mixed-used corridors and less developed areas.

The measure is not an overall ban for the entire parish. The ban would only affect areas that are typically single-family home neighborhoods. Council member Cynthia Lee-Sheng said that people who rent their homes on Air B&B are acting as a business.

Airbnb is not as popular in Jefferson Parish as it is in the City of New Orleans. Metairie has the most Airbnb listings at 127, followed by Gretna and Grand Isle at 46 and 36 respectively. Harahan, River Ridge and Lafitte also had some listings.
