Man accused of deadly New Orleans crime spree due in court

Charles Williams, 25, faces 39 charges, including one count of second-degree murder for shooting 38-year-old Ricky Goins.

NEW ORLEANS – A man who police say went on a crime spree that included shooting six people, two carjackings and two armed robberies is expected to be in court Monday.

In total, 25-year-old Charles Williams faces 39 charges, including one count of second-degree murder for shooting 38-year-old Ricky Goins. Other charges include 13 counts of attempted second-degree murder, five counts of armed robbery with a firearm and seven counts of aggravated assault with a firearm.

Investigators say Williams left his father’s home in the 1900 block of St. Roch Avenue and shot two men and a woman on a nearby porch. He then allegedly went to the 1400 block of North Derbigny Street in the 7th Ward and shot another person in the face in a carjacking.

Williams then allegedly stole a second car at gunpoint in the 1700 block of Desire Parkway in the Upper 9th Ward, police say.

At some point during the crime spree, Williams was driving side-by-side with Goins on Elysian Fields. Detectives say they found Goins shot to death in a car in the 2400 block of Elysian Fields Avenue. Goins was shot in the head and he later crashed into the back of another car with two people inside, police say.

Williams then headed back to the St. Roch area and fired at police officers who were gathering evidence from the earlier shooting. A bullet grazed the chest of a police officer.

Other officers chased Williams to the 1000 block of North Carrolton where he flipped his stolen vehicle after hitting another car.
