VACHERIE – A man who was operating a farm tractor died after he collided with a train in Vacherie.
According to Louisiana State Police, the crash happened around 10 a.m. on Sunday on LA 3213. Mathew Alexander III was traveling north on the highway on a farm tractor that was towing a 34-foot sugar cane hopper. Alexander approached the rail road crossing on LA 3213 when the crossing arms were down and the red flashing lights were on. According to Louisiana State Police, the audible warning signal was also on.
For unknown reasons, Alexander drove around the crossing arms and entered the path of a Union Pacific train going eastbound. Alexander’s tractor was struck by the train and he sustained fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. James Coroner’s Office.
Louisiana State Police say impairment is not known at this time however toxicology reports are pending. There were no injuries reported on the train and there was no derailment.
