NEW ORLEANS -- Causeway Police are investigating a fatal accident that happened early Thursday morning on the Southbound lanes of the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway bridge. According to Causeway police, one person has died in a multi-car accident.

Carlton Dufrechou, General Manager of the Causeway Commission, said the accident happened around 2:30 a.m. Thursday morning about three miles before the end of the bridge.

According to Dufrechou, a woman driving a compact car allegedly ran into a truck causing the truck to hit the guardrail. Causeway police said they believe the woman was intoxicated. She was later identified as Olivia Matte, 27, according to officials. She has two previous DWIs and her license was suspended.

Police said one person in the truck was killed -- later identified as James Blackmond, 37 -- and the other was transported to the hospital.

The US Coast Guard was called to the scene to assist with the investigation and were using sonar equipment to search the water.

Watchstanders from Coast Guard Sector New Orleans said they received a report from the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway Police Department at 3:48 a.m. about a possible car in the water following a multi-vehicle crash.

Causeway officials said about 100 feet of railing was missing the southbound lanes of the Causeway following the accident.

Dufrechou said the Coast Guard sonar search did not find any cars or people in the water.
