COVINGTON - A man trying to lend a helping hand to a friend accidentally rolled over him with his pickup truck in the parking lot of a Covington store Thursday.

According to Covington police, 67-year-old Donald Wilburn Leavelle of Covington was riding in his friend's dually truck going to shop at Walmart around 4 p.m.

Mr. Leavelle had just gotten out of the hospital and was a bit weak, so the friend dropped him off near the front door.

Police said Mr. Leavelle got out and took a couple of steps toward the store, then, unbeknownst to his friend driving the truck, he turned around to go back toward the truck and one of the rear dually wheels struck him and knocked him to the ground and under the rear wheels of the truck.

Police said the driver saw Mr. Leavelle lying on the ground in the rear view mirror and called for emergency help.

Mr. Leavelle was rushed to the hospital and succumbed to his injuries about 10:30 p.m.

Covington Police said no charges would be filed in the case, calling it a tragic accident.
