COVINGTON – One man is dead after his car struck a tree and caught fire in the Covington area on Saturday night.
The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to a vehicle on fire at Memphis Trace in the Natchez Trace subdivision around 11:30 p.m. Deputies discovered a vehicle went off the roadway before striking a tree and becoming engulfed in flames.
Before the vehicle caught fire, good Samaritans pulled the driver from the vehicle and attempted to render aid, the sheriff’s office says.
The driver, identified as 36-year-old Samuel Collins of Ponchatoula, was taken to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Toxicology reports are pending from the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office and the investigation of the incident is ongoing, however speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the crash.
