LACOMBE – A truck driving on I-12 lost a tire, sending sparks flying and starting multiple brush fires along the interstate.
Firefighters were battling the blazes around noon on Wednesday, Nov. 29.
According to the St. Tammany Fire Department, a truck carrying a piece of equipment to Texas to help with Hurricane Harvey recovery lost a tire, causing the equipment to drag behind it. The dragging equipment sent sparks flying, lighting brush fires on both sides of the Westbound lanes of I-12 near Lacombe.
Officials say the recent streak of dry weather played a role in the fires starting and spreading. According to Meteorologist Dave Nussbaum, it hasn’t rained on the North Shore since Nov. 18 and the cold front coming through will make things even drier.
