CHALMETTE, La. -- Flames seen at the PBF Chalmette Refinery that caused alarm for residents and neighbors Saturday night were the result of heavy flaring, according to refinery officials.
Multiple videos were shared on social media shortly after 11 p.m., showing a large fire and smoke coming from the refinery late Saturday night.
Elizabeth Frost, community relations director for the refinery, apologized for the alarm the planned flaring caused Saturday night.
"We notified all the proper officials and local agencies," Frost said. She added that the refinery sent information to St. Bernard Parish Government, posted the information to their Facebook page and placed ads that ran Friday in local papers about the flaring event.
