Miss. River reopens after oil spill

Oil was spilled into the water when a ship collided with the Nashville Street Wharf, up-river from the Quarter.

The Mississippi River has reopened.

The Coast Guard announced Friday afternoon that the Mississippi River near the French Quarter has reopened after an oil spill shut it down Thursday.

Crews are still in the water, cleaning up the spill, but vessels such as the Algiers Ferry will once again be operational for the big French Quarter Fest weekend.

Oil was spilled into the water when a ship collided with the Nashville Street Wharf, up-river from the Quarter.

Clean up crews expect to still be working Saturday, but will suspend operations if the weather calls for it.
