NEW ORLEANS -- The Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office announced Friday an inmate in custody is dead Friday.

Officials said the 41-year-old inmate was found in distress early Friday morning by the deputy on duty. Emergency medical services brought the inmate to the medical unit but were not able to save him, officials said.

Authorities said the inmate was on detoxification protocol for opiates.

The inmate's name is being held pending family notification. OPSO said the parish coroner is expected to conduct an autopsy, as well as provide a toxicology report.
