NEW ORLEANS – Crews are responding to a scaffolding collapse in the 500 block of Carondolet between Poydras and Union streets on Tuesday afternoon.
The New Orleans Fire Department arrived on scene to find eight tiers of scaffolding had fallen from the alongside the building and onto cars. The fallen scaffolding covered a third of the block and covering the street car track.
According to the fire department, two people were in vehicles that were struck by the scaffolding but they were not injured.
RTA has deactivated the streetcar track until the scene is cleared.
NOLA Ready tweeted about the incident saying that the incident has caused a closure of the street.
CLARIFICATION: The structure collapse is located on the 500 block of Carondolet between Poydras and Union. That street will be CLOSED until the contractor can safely remove the remaining fallen scaffolding. No injuries reported. Expect heavy delays. Drivers are advised to expect heavy delays in the area and are asked to avoid the area until the scene is cleared.
