Pork lovers rejoice! Hogs for the Cause kicks off

The event is a meat lovers dream.

NEW ORLEANS - Thousands will make their way to UNO's Lakefront Arena Field this weekend for Hogs for the Cause. More than 80 teams are competing, offering their best version of pork.

With smokers lit and people hungry, the 10th annual two-day event began.

"It's definitely my favorite festival in New Orleans," said Keller Walsh.

"To me it's almost the perfect event," said David McCelvey with Fleur-de-Que.

From bacon on a stick to pork tacos and some other deliciousness in-between the event is a meat lovers dream.

"We had the ribs here which were good and the Mac 'n Cheese with pulled pork," said Michele Diboll.

"Obviously the food, whatever food you get it'll be something good," Walsh said.

However, while people come to fill their bellies, they also attend to help give back by raising money for families with children battling brain cancer.

"What we do is go in and financially fill the void between what insurance provides and what the family can afford," Hall said.

McCelvey, with Team Fleur-de-Que, says it's a cause their team holds close to heart.

"Someone they know has been affected by cancer and you want to fight back," he said. "You want to do it in a fun way and you want to help remember those people who've lost their lives and those who are fighting now."

With record crowds expected this year, people are doing more than enjoying the food and weather. They're celebrating the fact they're serving up success and making a difference to so many.

"Come out and support the cause," Diboll said. "There's a ton of good food you can't go wrong."

The event on Saturday starts at 11:30 a.m. at the UNO Lakefront Arena grounds. Daily general admission tickets are $25 in advance and $35 day of.
