CHALMETTE - The St. Bernard Sheriff's Office, the Coast Guard and the Harbor Police are searching an area of the Mississippi River near the Chalmette Ferry landing after deputies said a 14-year-old boy jumped in following a police chase and crash early Thursday morning.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m. near the ferry landing.

According to the sheriff's office, deputies tried to conduct a vehicle stop on a silver Infiniti FX35 after a moving violation. The vehicle was later determined to be a stolen car out of Orleans Parish.

Deputies said the vehicle refused to stop and a chase ensued. The suspect's vehicle eventually left the road near the Chalmette ferry landing and crashed into the guardrail.

The driver and a passenger jumped out and ran. The 14-year-old driver fled on foot and was last seen in the river. The 15-year-old passenger was apprehended by deputies.
