Anyone in St. Bernard Parish who has too much to drink this holiday season and needs a way home will soon be able to call a deputy for a ride.

Sheriff James Pohlmann announced the "Free Ride Home" program Thursday. Starting on Thanksgiving Day, residents who have too much to drink can get a free ride home from a deputy with no questions asked.

To request a ride, call 504-271-2501 and a deputy will pick you up and take you to your home in St. Bernard Parish. If you live outside the parish, the deputy will take you to a sheriff’s office substation where you can make arrangements to be picked up by a friend or family member.

The goal of the program is to reduce the number of drunk driving crashes, Sheriff Pohlmann said.

“It is so simple and it could save your life, or the life of someone you might hit in a traffic accident,” Pohlmann said.

The program will run from Thanksgiving Day through Jan. 2.
