Hahnville – An attempted armed robbery at a Hahnville-area fast food restaurant drive-thru lane ended with a man shot and a suspect on the loose.

The incident occurred around 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Burger King near Highway 90 in Boutte.

Police said the victim, who works for an ATM provider, was in the line when a man came up and tried to rob him. In the fracas, the victim was shot, but he drove to a nearby hotel and raced inside for help.

The exact condition of the victim wasn’t known, but he was said to be doing ‘okay.’

The suspect meanwhile fled on foot and it is believed that he eventually got into a car and fled the scene. He was described as a 20-something year-old black male wearing a dark hoodie with white stripes. He was said to be about 5’10” tall and had dreadlocks.

In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, nearby Hahnville High was put on lockdown. Even though class wasn’t in session, parents and some students were on hand for registration. The lockdown was eventually lifted at 11:30 a.m.

One of the workers at the hotel, who came to the aid of the victim, but who did not want to be identified, said workers wrapped the man’s arm and called 911.

“Very scary, very scary,” she said. “He just drove up and ran inside for help. I guess this was a safe place for him.”

The sheriff’s office continued the search for the assailant into the evening hours Wednesday.
