Warm weather leads to early snowball season in New Orleans

Customers' demands are met, owners say

NEW ORLEANS -- Friday marked the fifth straight day in the metro area with a record high, and snowball stands were quick to take advantage of the summer-like weather by opening early.

Imperial Woodpecker Sno-Balls usually opens March, but customers were asking for the frozen treats now, so employees broke out the ice.

"We had hundreds of people ask during Mardi Gras, 'Can I get a snowball?' So we opened back up," employee Shae Jolly said.

Over at Plum Street Snoballs, Friday was the grand reopening day for the same reason.

"The weather has been wild and crazy, so we thought it's warm; lets go ahead and do the deed and make everyone happy," owner Donna Black said.

For the customers who came out today, happy might be an understatement.

"Everywhere else in the country I don't understand what they mean when they say it's winter still," customer Elizabeth Segraves said.
