The Sherwood Forest subdivision was a large crime scene for much of Monday morning. Three shootings, one of which was fatal in less than five hours overnight has the New Orleans East neighborhood on edge.

"It's peaceful," neighbor Carlin Harris said. "It's very peaceful. So, for this to happen right down the street from our house is like what's going on?"

"The neighborhood is always quiet and it's calm," neighbor Rev. Lovie Gibson said. "Especially in the daytime. It doesn't happen. I mean, this just doesn't happen."

According to police, the first shooting happened shortly after 3 a.m. Monday in the 4800 block of Nottingham Drive. That's where a 21-year-old man was shot in the shoulder.

About a half hour later, police say a 20-year-old man was shot in the ankle near the corner of Tynecastle Drive and Pressburg Street.

Police say the victim was sitting inside his vehicle with a woman when two unknown subjects wearing ski masks approached and opened the doors. One of them fired a shot into the vehicle, striking the victim.

Then around 7:20 a.m. Monday, someone shot and killed a man in the 4900 block of Major Drive.

Neighbors say the violence is an unfortunate reminder that you have to remain on guard, even in front of your own house.

"It's of great concern for the neighbors," one neighbor who didn't want to give his name said. "We have to get together and keep a closer watch out for things that are going on because I heard nothing like that was going on in this area."

"Just always be prepared for anything," Harris said. "Don't ever get too relaxed. Don't live in fear, but don't get too relaxed."

It's unclear if the three shootings are connected.

"It could be drug related," Gibson said. "It could be beefing, some families among each other. I can't give you an answer because I don't know. I can only tell you I be praying."

As of this post, police have not released any additional details about the shootings.
