Report: More people move out of New Orleans than move in for the first time since Katrina

However, the city's population increased by 271 people due to new births and immigration from other countries.

NEW ORLEANS – Population growth in the city of New Orleans has slowed to a trickle according to a report citing new census data.

According to the New Orleans Advocate, more people moved out of New Orleans than moved in – a first since Hurricane Katrina in 2005 – in the year ending on July 1, 2017. However, the city’s population increased by 271 people due to new births and immigration from other countries.

The report says New Orleans’ growth was the smallest increase in the past decade, but experts generally regard annual estimates as less reliable than the official census survey conducted every 10 years.

The New Orleans Advocate reports that Orleans Parish’s growth lagged behind other parishes in the metro area. The area as a whole added a few thousand people, mostly in St. Tammany Parish. The population of Louisiana also somewhat shrank.
