PONCHATOULA – A 2-year-old child died at the hospital after he was found unresponsive in a Pontchatoula pool during the weekend, according to reports.

Ponchatoula Police responded to a medical call around 3:30 p.m. Saturday after Nash Bennett was found unresponsive in a pool. Police and medical personnel responded to the scene and rendered medical aid, restoring the child’s heartbeat.

Police said Monday the child remained in critical condition under close doctor care. WBRZ-TV reports that the child's grandmother shared on Facebook that Nash died Monday night. Melba Bennett wrote that the 2-year-old will be an organ donor.

"What a little hero he will be to the other little ones in need," Bennett shared. "He was a fighter and will forever be a hero."

The family has set up a crowdfunding campaign to raise money for medical and funeral costs. As of Wednesday morning, the campaign raised more than $6,700.

“We ask you to join us in sending prayers to this child and family,” Ponchatoula Police Chief Bry Layrisson said. “This tragic incident is being handled with great care and detail. We ask for everyone to respect this family during this trying time.”
