BATON ROUGE – Deputy Shawn Anderson, who died after being shot Saturday night, has been called the ‘epitome of….a public servant.’

A year ago, he helped deliver a baby on Tiger Bend Road when the family couldn’t reach the hospital in time.

When Deputy Anderson talked to The Advocate after the delivery, he said he had no formal training on what to do in the situation. He had only watched his wife deliver their two children.

“I walked back to my truck and grabbed my gloves,” Anderson said, adding that the deputies asked him what they were going to do.

“We’re fixin’ to deliver a baby,” Anderson told them.

Deputy Anderson was shot and killed at a hair salon while investigating a rape. Authorities said Anderson and another deputy struggled with a man inside Classic Cuts on O’Neal Lane around 11 p.m. and shot were fired. It is unclear what led to the struggle.

“Our hearts are broken as we grieve for one of our brothers,” Sheriff Sid Gautreaux said in a statement. “We ask for your continued prayers and support during this difficult time as we mourn the loss and honor the memory of Sgt. Shawn Anderson.”
