The NFL assigned a former Atlanta Falcons player to the officiating crew for the Saints’ Thursday night game against the Falcons according to our partners at The New Orleans Advocate.
Whether an actual conflict of interest exists is up for debate, but many Saints fans have had some choice words for the referees after the Saints loss.
The Saints were given 11 penalties for 87 yards, including an alignment penalty at the end of the first half that negated a field goal.
Former Falcons player Phil McKinnely served as the down judge during the game in Atlanta. He played for the Falcons from 1976-80.
McKinnely has worked 13 Saints games and 20 involving the Falcons throughout his career according to the report. He also worked New Orleans’ first game against Carolina and another one against Tampa Bay this season. The Saints won both games.
