This is Real Bayou Country. Bayou Lafourche travels through the entire 100-mile length of Lafourche Parish from Thibodaux, the parish seat, founded in 1820, all the way to Port Fourchon, a modern, bustling facility that supports the offshore oil industry. Thibodaux is home to a number of historic locations, the E. D. White Historic Site and Laurel Valley Plantation, both listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Wetlands Acadian Cultural Center, part of the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve, tells the story of the Acadians who settled along the bayous.


Fishing charters, swamp tours, camping, fairs, and festivals and plenty of great Cajun cuisine is available up and down the bayou. The Bayou Lafourche area offers major accommodations, as well as locally owned motels and bed and breakfasts are offered throughout the Bayou Lafourche area. Rates: Most attractions are free.


Directions: From New Orleans, take I-10 west, to I-310, right on U.S. 90 to Raceland/LA 1 exit 215A. After exiting turn left on LA 1 to head to Raceland, Thibodaux and Kraemer; turn right on LA 1 to visit the Welcome Center, Lockport, Larose, Cut Off, Galliano, Golden Meadow, Leeville and Fourchon.
