Watch: Aftermath of Hurricane Ida on Grand Isle

Officials there said up to 40 people refused to evacuate Grand Isle, choosing to ride out the storm there as gusts of up to 180 mph hit the Louisiana coastline.

GRAND ISLE, La. — Footage from Coast Guard helicopters flying over Grand Isle on Monday shows the aftermath Hurricane Ida had Sunday night.

The footage shows the extent of the destruction the Cat. 4 hurricane had on the island at the southernmost portion of Jefferson Parish.

Officials there said up to 40 people refused to evacuate Grand Isle despite a mandatory evacuation, choosing to ride out the storm there as gusts of up to 180 mph hit the Louisiana coastline.

Footage shoes destroyed homes, structures without roofs, and failed levees.

Floodwaters have yet to recede in some parts of the island.
