Three-and-a-half years ago a gunman shot and robbed Massachusetts resident Dave Maclellan's son John on a quiet street in Lakeview.

Maclellan, who returns to New Orleans periodically, said NOPD investigators still do not know who shot and robbed his son during an early morning ambush near his home at 6319 Bellaire. He said he still cannot believe what happened and vows to work until the murderers are caught and convicted.

"I don't think that you realize the impact you have on another family over a few dollars that you didn’t get from this particular individual,” Maclellan said.

CrimeStoppers Executive Director Darlene Cusanza said there are few clues but hopes information will surface.

“What we always hope for is sometimes a perpetrator will tell someone else, and they will talk about it, and people then remember things, and they say yes, someone did say that,” Cusanza said. “And those little bits of information can open up a case and/or solve a case for law enforcement.”

Maclellan said his son, who was a bartender at Smith & Wolenksy's, was walking home from a nearby nightspot when he was shot. Right after the shooting family and friends rallied round him and donated blood to save him.

But after spending two weeks at Charity Hospital, John Maclellan died as a result of his wounds.

His father said he still cannot believe what happened

“The loss of my oldest son as with the first child in any family, you just miss them. It’s difficult. I think about him everyday, Some days they are easier than others, but when I’m talking about it too long I become very emotional.

“With any particular violent crime, or any crime, I think it’s important we all remember it’s someone’s loved one,” Cusanza said. “It could be your loved one, because certainly crime affects everyone. And it just makes it so much more human to realize that there is a grieving father here who doesn’t let go.

New Orleans Police ask that anyone with knowledge of the murder call Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111. All tips in the case will remain anonymous and could lead to a 25-hundred dollar reward
