NEW ORLEANS -- Actor and comedian Russell Brand has surrendered to New Orleans law enforcement, according to the sheriff's office.
He was booked late Thursday on a single count of criminal damage to property, sheriff's office records show. He was released just before 4:30 p.m.
According to a TMZ story, Brand, who is in New Orleans shooting a movie, reportedly grabbed the iPhone from a member of the paparazzi who was photographing him and threw it through the window of a law firm. The incident happened Monday.
The photographer reportedly filed charges with the NOPD for simple criminal damage, while Brand has offered to pay for the smashed window.
The comedian explained the incident on his Twitter account as such: "Since Steve Jobs died I cannot bear to see anyone use an iPhone irreverently, what I did was a tribute to his memory."
