A first-timer at Mardi Gras: King cake is like a cinnamon roll on steroids!

King Cakes

As a recent transplant to the city of New Orleans, I am completely fascinated by Mardi Gras!

I know this statement removes some of my credibility, but I have completely embraced my clue-less-ness about New Orleanian traditions, and I can’t soak it all up fast enough.

As a devout Catholic, I am enthralled that so many of these famous traditions are based in our faith! Christmas is my favorite time of year, and I was shocked that Carnival season started so soon after Christmas! It was fantastic! It’s like a second Christmas.

Obviously, it all starts with King Day, and probably my favorite thing ever, KING CAKE! Oh my gosh, it’s incredible. My first experience with King Cake was down at Dong Phuong Bakery in New Orleans East. We went live all morning from the bakery and watched King Cake, after King Cake, after King Cake get perfected by the employees. The fact that one bakery sells tens of thousands of King Cake in a couple months is just incredible to me. But once I tasted it, I understand completely. Holy smokes…it’s like a cinnamon roll on steroids! And I love how everyone brings one to work. We have had so many different King Cake here at the station, and I have been able to try so many different kinds! My favorite will always be the first one I ever had…my Dong Phuong King Cake.

Carnival Ladders

My husband and I live downtown and we can’t believe how soon all of the stands go up on St. Charles! People don’t mess around down here.

We were looking at video from the ladders that people set out, and it was so interesting to see all the purple, gold, and green that people painted on their ladders. I was so confused as to what the buckets on top of the ladders are for: I had never seen that before!

Our Executive Producer, Val, told me that people need somewhere to put all the things they get at parades! Makes total sense. John and I didn’t go to Krewe de Vieux cause we aren’t really into the raunchy scene, so we decided to wait until this weekend for our first parade! We are going to watch the Oshun parade on Friday, and we can’t wait! Don’t worry, I will let you know how it goes.
