NEW ORLEANS - With just under a month to go before their much-anticipated parade, the krewe of Muses is offering one lucky woman a chance to ride in the parade, by bidding in an online auction with proceeds to benefit the non-profit St. Bernard Project.

Krewe officials outlined plans for the benefit auction on Monday.  Last year, a similar auction raised $8,900 for charity.

On Monday, the women of Muses also announced that local civil rights figure Ruby Bridges will ride with the 1,500-plus member krewe as their honorary muse.  Bridges was one of the first African-Americans to integrate New Orleans public schools in 1960.    She'll ride in the large iconic red shoe float when the parade rolls on Feb. 7.

The online auction for a spot on a float in this year’s parade is being administered through eBay, with a deadline for bidding set for this Friday, Jan. 18 at 6:30 p.m.

Auction proceeds will be designated to the local home rebuilding and recovery agency, the St. Bernard Project and its veterans training and recruitment program to assist female veterans.

Through its Good Work/Good Pay program, the St. Bernard Project provides on-the-job training for recently returned combat veterans, including women veterans, seeking to gain skills in carpentry, electrical or plumbing trades.

The minimum bid is $1,000 and the rider must be a woman over the age of 18. The ride package includes the costume, mask, a small package of throws, entry to the riding members-only pre-party and post-parade aMUSEment party.
