As it celebrates its 20th anniversary, Orpheus will also continue its tradition of packing as many familiar faces as it can onto its beautifully-designed floats. This year’s celebrities include actor Gary Sinise, Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews, actress Mariska Hargitay and the Imagination Movers.
Krewe co-founder Harry Connick Jr. has written a new song about the krewe’s signature Smokey Mary float which will also make its debut.
The krewe will throw a special LED necklace marking Orpheus’ 20th anniversary, which plays the new song’s chorus. Also, a special Musical Legend doubloon will honor “Uncle Lionel” Batiste, who died last year.
The super krewe, co-founded by native son Harry Connick Jr. back in 1993, has become a favorite on Lundi Gras. Its classically-themed floats are elaborately-decorated, many featuring flowers, birds and other items that shimmy and shake as the floats move down the street. Also, look for the signature Leviathan, Smokey Mary and Trojan Horse floats. Some of the celebrities who have participated in Orpheus in years past include Cyndi Lauper, Patricia Clarkson, Whoopi Goldberg, Glenn Close, Sandra Bullock, Vanessa Williams, Dan Aykroyd and Stevie Wonder. Check out the krewe’s web site for lots of photos and even video from past parades. Once again this year the parade ends at the Morial Convention Center with the Orpheuscapade. Entertainment there will include Connick, Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band, Trombone Shorty, Party Crashers and Vince Vance and the Valiants.
