Backstreet Cultural Museum keeps culture of Mardi Gras Indians alive

Historian Sylvester Francis runs the museum, and his brother Robert Francis helps him do tours when the museum is open. Over the past 25 years Sylvester has gathered memorabilia, film and photos of the history of the black New Orleans culture, with an emphasis on the Indians that bring some of the city’s most cherished holidays to life.
