The Key to the City, shown here, was damaged in Hurricane Katrina. Hales said the ribbons were damaged during Hurricane Katrina, and to keep the memory of the rebuilding effort alive, they decided to leave the faded ribbons as-is. However, they did polish the key.
The Key to the City used to be given to Rex by the mayor each year at Gallier Hall. Now the mayor and Rex meet at the Riverwalk on Lundi Gras to exchange the key.
