The Phunny Phorty Phellows took their annual historic streetcar ride Sunday, on Twelfth Night, announcing that it's officially Carnival time! The costumed and masked krewe (more than Phorty, but who's counting) boarded a St. Charles streetcar, as they have since 1981, to kickoff the Carnival season.

NEW ORLEANS - The skies cleared and the crowds packed the Willow St. streetcar barn Sunday night for the annual kickoff to Carnival, and the streetcar ride of the Phunny Phorty Phellows.

The night was complete with creative costumes, champagne for a toast, beads to throw from a streetcar window seat and a jazz band to get things going.

The group, which dates back to the 19th century, has reveled in its role as heralds of Carnival since 1981.
