NEW ORLEANS - One of the first steps taken to prevent damage to Gulf Coast wetlands from the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion and oil spill was to use chemical dispersants.

But many scientists, even at that time, wondered if the cure would be worse than the spill.

Under the direction of the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative, a team of scientists have been studying the effects of the oil spill and the use of the dispersants on the environment.

The results of the study have been released and board chair of the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative, Dr. Rita Colwell, joined us to discuss them.
